The Golden Bar, located in the Haus der Kunst, is a true treasure of Munich and a perfect place to enjoy our THORALM Dry Gin. Every day from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., the Golden Bar welcomes its guests with a hand-made breakfast café and croissants, an exquisite lunch, coffee and cake in the afternoon and a restaurant for special dinner experiences.
A bar with historical depth
Originally designed by Paul Ludwig Troost as an “artists’ party room”, the Golden Bar celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2012. The House of Art, opened in 1937, offered not only art exhibitions but also a gastronomic concept. A leaflet from 1938 describes the “Restaurants of the House of German Art” as an elegant coffee restaurant with an open-air terrace and a view of the English Garden, a delightful bar with a dance floor and a beer parlor in the basement. This variety offered visitors an upscale gastronomic experience, comparable to that of a luxury hotel or steamer.
The wall decoration
Particularly impressive are the wall paintings in the Golden Bar, which were painted on gold leaf by Karl Heinz Dallinger. They show maps and figurative representations that provide information about the origin of rum, cigars, tobacco, champagne, whisky and wine. These wall decorations give the bar a cosmopolitan atmosphere and at the same time tell the story of the trade and production of these fine luxury items.
Post-war period and critical dismantling
After World War II, many structural changes were made to conceal the monumentality of the building. In the 1950s, the wall paintings were covered with plywood panels. It was not until 2003, under the artistic direction of Chris Dercon, that the "critical dismantling" began, during which the original paintings were uncovered and restored. Konstantin Grcic added contemporary elements to the bar that respectfully complement the historical character of the Golden Bar.
Modern aesthetics and renowned leadership
In 2010, Leonie von Carnap and Klaus St. Rainer took over the Golden Bar. Klaus St. Rainer, a renowned bartender, has received international recognition for his shaker manufacture and bar concepts at major media events in Los Angeles, Cannes and Venice. Today, the bar's interior consists of furniture from the 1950s and 1960s, and the eye-catcher is a chandelier from the 1920s that once hung in the Hotel Savoy in Zurich. The counter and a large illuminated image in the lounge were designed by the painter Florian Süssmayr in a graffiti aesthetic.
The Golden Bar's drinks menu continues the aesthetic break between then and now. Classic drinks are refined here with modern techniques to create a new drinking experience.
Awards and Recognition
The Golden Bar has received many awards. In 2012, Drinks International London named it one of the 50 best bars in the world, and in 2013 it was named Bar of the Year at the Mixology Bar Awards. Klaus St. Rainer has been named Bartender of the Year several times, and his book “Cocktails – The Art of Mixing Perfect Drinks” received the Gourmand Cookbook Award for the best cocktail book in Germany and is one of the three best cocktail books in the world.
