Welcome, dear gin fans! Today we are celebrating a very special day: World Gin Day! A day dedicated to our favorite drink. At THORALM we have come up with something special to celebrate this day appropriately. Grab a glass, sit back and let our enthusiasm infect you!
A Look into the History of Gin
Gin has had a fascinating journey. Originally invented as a medicine in the 17th century by the Dutch, it became known as “Genever” and quickly gained popularity as a remedy for stomach problems and other ailments. The English discovered Genever during the Eighty Years’ War and brought it to Britain, where it quickly became popular as “gin” established.
Gin production flourished in London in the 18th century, and the Gin Craze led to an explosive spread of the spirit. However, this also led to social problems and calls for regulation, which led to the passing of the Gin Act of 1751, which strictly regulated the production and sale of gin.
During the 19th century, gin evolved into a refined drink enjoyed in society's salons and clubs. The introduction of London Dry Gin, known for its clean and dry taste, set new standards and took quality to a new level.
In the 20th century, gin survived the Prohibition era in the United States and the World Wars, with its popularity reaching new heights in the 1950s and 1960s. The Martini era gave rise to elegant cocktails that put gin at the center.
In recent decades, gin has experienced a renaissance, shaped by the craft movement and the spirit of experimentation on the part of distilleries. From traditional juniper notes to modern, experimental botanicals, gin has continually reinvented itself while retaining its distinctive character. Today, there are countless gin variations that offer an incredible variety of flavors, from floral and fruity to earthy and spicy notes.
This evolution shows how gin has constantly adapted to the tastes of the times without forgetting its roots. Gin therefore remains not only a classic, but also a reflection of creativity and innovation in the world of spirits.
The Magic of Botanicals
A gin is only as good as its botanicalsAt THORALM we attach great importance to the selection and combination of our ingredients. Juniper is of course the heart of the product, but the real magic comes from the interaction with various herbs, spices and fruits.
