The Fog Cutter is a powerful, multi-layered cocktail that is one of the icons of Tiki culture due to its ingredients and history. Originally created by Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron in the 1940s, the Fog Cutter today stands for the typical mix of rum, citrus notes and exotic aromas that make up the essence of a Tiki drink - but with a surprising twist: In addition to rum, the Fog Cutter also contains brandy, gin and a special sherry note.
This cocktail is an adventure in a glass, traditionally served in special, often artistically decorated Fog Cutter tiki mugs, and impresses even experienced cocktail lovers. With our THORALM Dry Gin, the Fog Cutter gains an aromatic depth and balance that takes the drink to a new level.

Fog Cutter variants in comparison
variant | Special feature | Difference to the classic version | Taste & Character | Typical glass / presentation |
---|---|---|---|---|
Fog Cutter (classic) | Original recipe from Trader Vic | With rum, brandy, gin & cream sherry as a float | Complex, strong, nutty-citrus fresh | Tiki mug or highball, sherry float on top |
Samoan Fog Cutter | Milder version of Trader Vic | Less alcohol, more juice, often with crushed ice instead of shaken | Fruitier, lighter, almost like a punch | Tiki glass with crushed ice & colorful decoration |
Royal Navy Fog Cutter | Powerful, “seafaring” twist | Using Navy Rum instead of Cream Sherry | Stronger, drier, slightly smoky | Old Fashioned or tumbler glass |
Viking Fog Cutter | Scandinavian interpretation | Replace sherry with aquavit or herbal liqueurs | Spicy, Nordic, unusually aromatic | Rustic glass, often with herbal decoration |
Modern Fog Cutter | Reinterpretations in bars worldwide | Partly with grapefruit juice, falernum, or altered spirits | Bartender's Choice – from fruity to floral | Designer glass or classic tiki mug |
Frozen Fog Cutter | Frozen cocktail variation | Prepared in a blender with crushed ice, more tropical than classic | Creamy, icy, smoothie feeling with alcohol | Tall glass with straw & fruits |
The History of the Fog Cutter
The Fog Cutter was created at a time when the Tiki culture was just blossoming. In the 1930s to 1960s, tiki bars and restaurants became an integral part of the gastronomy in the USA, often characterized by tropical themes and exotic decorations. Trader Vic, one of the pioneers of this movement, created the Fog Cutter in response to the desire for strong, fruity drinks that let you forget everyday life. The name "Fog Cutter" aptly describes the effect of the cocktail: after just one or two glasses, the mental fog seems to have disappeared, or, as Vic said: "After two of these, you won't even see the stuff."
However, there have always been discussions about the true origin of the drink. It is suspected that bartenders at Don the Beachcomber, the other great Tiki legend, may also have developed the recipe. However, Trader Vic was the one who made the Fog Cutter popular in his bars around the world, and so the creation of the cocktail is generally attributed to him. The Fog Cutter was eventually published in his "Bartender's Guide" in 1947.
Variations and modern twists
Because the Fog Cutter is relatively strong, various variations have been created over the years, including the so-called "Samoan Fog Cutter". Trader Vic developed this milder version, which contains a lower amount of alcohol and is mixed with crushed ice instead of shaken, giving the drink a more fruity, light punch character. Other variants, such as the "Royal Navy Fog Cutter" and the "Viking Fog Cutter", swap the sherry for stronger spirits, such as aquavit or navy rum. Each variant brings its own flavor, but retains the spirit of the original recipe.
The right choice of spirits
A key factor for the perfect Fog Cutter is the choice of spirits. The light Puerto Rican-style rum brings a subtle sweetness that harmonizes well with the citrus notes, while the brandy gives the drink its characteristic depth. Our THORALM Dry Gin is the ideal choice for this cocktail: The classic juniper notes and the fine, dry taste of the gin blend wonderfully with the complex aroma of the Fog Cutter without dominating the drink. The cream sherry also provides a sweet finish and an additional aromatic layer.
Tips for perfect floating and variations of the presentation
"Floating" means carefully adding an ingredient to the drink so that it floats on top. In the case of the Fog Cutter, it is the cream sherry that rounds off the drink as a sweet, mild finish. To make this layer float on the cocktail, gently pour the sherry over the back of a spoon directly onto the surface of the drink. When you drink, you take in the fine sherry notes in the first sip, which creates a special layer of flavors.
If you want the full Tiki experience, you can of course serve the Fog Cutter with additional decorations. In Tiki bars, you almost expect a bit of “frills”: a small umbrella, exotic fruits or a lemon zest look good and give the drink that certain something.
